I’ve labeled a lot of wires in my time, and never have been quite satisfied with any system or tags that I’ve used in the past. Now I’ve found my perfect answer.

My usual need is when I’m routing a lot of audio cables from one point to another, although I’m sure they would also be useful to label the connections to the back of any piece of video or audio gear.

These labels are pretty simple: each label is made of clear sticky plastic, with a writeable white strip at one end. You write whatever you want on the white part, stick that part on the wire first, and wrap the rest of the clear plastic around the wire, protecting the writing surface. I used an ultra-fine black Sharpie pen, after discovering that normal pens either smear or skip, but the Sharpie worked just fine.

These labels worked out far better for me than pre-printed (and arbitrary) labels, nylon tags, or writing directly on the wire. I could still pull the wire through tight spaces or connector shells, and they are inexpensive enough that I didn’t mind wasting a few (which I always seem to do when I’m pulling lots of individual cables).

I’m going to be sure to keep a roll of these in my toolbox from now on.
